I said that my parents did their best and my uncle went off pointing this out. I was 50 something when I realized they in fact did not do their best.

Yep. In my case my father and step-mother divorced and I live in different cities. They didn’t even tell me her graduation date until the day of. They are all canceled to me.

Damn. This hit hard. I always justified my dad’s insults and hostility toward me with this rationale. But all I ever wanted was to have a conversation with him like he talks to my brother and cousins

Read the book, listened to the audio book, did my own journaling. You still find ways to give me new strength

Exactly. My best therapist broke me by saying My god why aren’t you angry at your mother?? I said bc she did her best. She countered No she didn’t, she failed to protect you over herself. I cried.
