![[Comment “Source” to Join Us] Many have claimed that Mexicans of African descent don’t identify with the word Afro-Mexican. They insist that the use of the label is a divisive U.S born tactic. Well according to Paula Cruz Guzman, one of the leaders of the Afro-Mexican community’s fight for recognition, it turns out the use of this word is one of choice. During the 2011 meeting of the Black towns of Guerrero and Oaxaca, Cruz and other participants came to concession that Afro-Mexican would be the chosen name for Mexicans of African descent. She and so many others fought to be recognized by the government under that name which was decided based on their African ancestry and Mexican nationality. Thanks to people like Señora Guzman the Mexican census now list Afro-Mexican as a selection option.
