Why would somebody donate pasta which needs to be boiled but not something that needs a can opener?

I always donate spices and chocolate/candy in addition to other stuff. cause a little treat is nice, and spices (even salt & pepper) can help something taste better.

Cash is best, imo. Then the pantry can get exactly what they need. Pet food is good too. And travel size toiletries and feminine hygiene products are always needed

Ive always been told that cash would be best so the bank could get what they were missing or could get perishables when they needed to or if they had someone who needed specific things

I always buy an extra box of lunch treats when I stock up for my kids. And when I buy a box of tampons, I buy an extra box.

The food bank I volunteered for would keep the pull tab cans specifically for homeless people.

My local pantry only accepts cans with pull tabs. Which is good for accessibility, but that also cuts out a lot of options

I find that calling or emailing them to ask what they need at this time.
also spices like salt/pepper/garlic powder it can mean a big difference in plain rice & canned veg
