If you want to hear a lesson in how to speak so much but say so little, listen to the Climate Change Minister try and answer my question about new coal and gas approvals. Since I asked this question, Labor has already approved another coal mine, the Gregory Crinum Coal Mine that will run until 2073, well past when we’re meant to be reaching ‘net zero’. We’ve just heard that parts of Queensland are expected to enter ‘catastrophic’ bushfire conditions this week, off the back of Australia’s warmest winter on record. In 2019, ‘catastrophic’ bushfire conditions set off the black summer bushfires which lasted months, drowned our cities in smoke, cost the economy around $80 billion and 33 people their lives. These are the real consequences when Labor and Liberal governments prop up Australia’s coal industry. Australia is the world’s second largest exporter of coal - and our inaction matters for the future of the planet. There can be no new coal mines if we want to stop catastrophic climate change. #auspol
