1. Stop translating everything word for word from English. German sentence structure sometimes works differently. It became easier when I started learning how Germans actually say something instead of trying to build the sentence in English first. 2. Learn useful sentence patterns, not just vocabulary. Knowing 1,000 random German words doesn’t automatically mean you can have a conversation. Phrases like Ich würde gerne…, Ich bin mir nicht sicher… or Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen…? give you something you can actually use. 3. Pay attention to the verb position. This was one of the biggest things for me. Once you understand where the verb goes in a normal sentence and what happens with words like weil, dass, obwohl etc., longer sentences become less intimidating. 4. Listening and understanding are different skills from speaking. You can understand what someone says to you and suddenly forget every German word you’ve ever learned when it’s your turn to answer 😂. Speaking needs its own practice. 5. You don’t need to understand every single word. Sometimes you can understand an entire conversation from context even if you missed a few words. Trying to translate every word in your head can actually make it harder to keep up. 6. The German you study and the German you hear outside won’t always sound the same. People speak quickly, shorten things and use everyday expressions. Real-life listening is something you have to train too. 7. Making mistakes is part of becoming conversational. Waiting until your grammar is perfect before speaking can keep you silent for a very long time. Say it wrong, get corrected, and try again. 8. Passing an exam and feeling confident speaking are two different things. You can know the grammar and still need time to become comfortable using German spontaneously. That doesn’t mean you haven’t learned anything. It just means speaking is another skill to build #german #germanlearning #livingingermany #deutschland #lernenmittiktok
