Another blow to the cost of living! What’s new? The prolonged regional war of attrition is putting pressure on Gulf economies, and Lebanon is feeling the impact through the jobs held by Lebanese expatriates there According to preliminary indicators, remittances from Lebanese workers in Gulf countries have fallen by more than 30% This decline comes alongside signs of contracting business activity across several sectors in Gulf countries As business slows, companies are cutting costs, particularly salaries and benefits, and laying off employees This puts thousands of Lebanese workers at risk, especially those earning higher salaries. Lebanese-owned businesses in the Gulf have also been severely affected For Lebanon, losing a job in the Gulf means a loss of income for a family back home that relies on these remittances to pay rent, medical expenses, and school tuition If pressure on employment continues and remittances decline further, fewer US dollars will flow into Lebanon, consumer spending will weaken, and many families will struggle even more to meet their basic needs The consequences of the regional war are thus adding another layer of pressure to Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, which began in 2019 In other words, another burden is being added to an already overwhelming list… as if what we’re going through weren’t enough!
