Every Hooper has heard the advice of “Attacking the Top Foot” in order to create an advantage and get past defenders off the dribble… But if you’re smaller, slower, and/or weaker than your defender…you’ve probably noticed that this does NOT work on a consistent basis! It’s a good rule of thumb, but if you really dig deep, you’ll find that it’s kind of lazy thinking. A lot more important variables factor into play, such as size, speed, balance, momentum, etc… For example, if your defender is more athletic and also happens to be 6 inches taller than you…99% of the time, one of your longest stride lengths is still going to be shorter than a half of theirs! (e.g., the amount of ground you can cover in 2 steps, they can cover in 1 step) Which means that even if you attack their top foot to open up their hips, they can most likely recover faster, thereby completely negating your advantage! Additionally, in a game-like situation, attacking the top foot is worthless if that results in you driving into help defense (unless you’re intentionally doing so to draw a double). Reading Space is more important than Reading a Top Foot! That’s why instead of focusing on a Top Foot, it’s a much better rule of thumb to simply CLOSE THE GAP and attack on the tightest driving angle possible! 🤗 #basketball #hooper #NBA #sports
