what I did and what I learned ✨👇🏼🌋 • took a train from Probolingo to Banyuwangi • checked into my hostel • download the trail on AllTrails • whatsapped every scooter rental company I could find till I found one that was open • slept for 1.5 hours • left at midnight • drove a little over an hour up to the trailhead • rented a gas mask (50K IDR - these are needed in certain sections due to the high levels of sulfuric gas) • paid for a ticket (150K IDR - need passport copy & health certif) • followed the trail 🫡 My original plans was to start the trail exactly at 2 and be one of the first people at the Blue Fire section, but a short cash fiasco left me 45 minutes behind schedule. I was glad to have left my hostel at midnight because I avoided most of the heavy traffic on the way up. I really didn’t want to get caught driving between 100s of vans and tour busses. Since I left the mountain later I was also able to avoid them on the drive back. Weather wasn’t ideal and visibility was low but I do still think it was worth it. I had talked to a girl in a tour group and she said they waited for almost 30 minutes in line for the Blue Fire since it’s a single track and it just gets massively bottlenecked. She also said the smoke was very harsh and burned the eyes. Even though I didn’t do the Blue Fire I was glad to have the gas mask for a few brief sections of the trail where the sulfuric gas was noticeable. Also those wheelbarrows in the video? People pay to get carried up the hill in them. Honestly quite the sight. You do need to be careful on the trail as a fall can be deadly. There are cliffs with exposure and an acidic lake below. ALSO I say solo but you’re surrounded by people unless you book it away from them lol but if you wanted to do this trail and not be by yourself it’s entirely possible. The hardest part of this whole thing was just figuring out logistics of how to get there. Big thanks to @backpackers523 for all the info I needed!!
