The Ancient Roman's concrete consisted of a mix of volcanic ash or also known as Pozzolana, lime, and water to make a mortar and could heal it self when it got wet for instance when it was raining 🏟️

Concrete is a science. There is not „one“ concrete used nowadays. The reason we don’t use roman concrete is because we have no buildings like this anymore where it would be useful and advantageous

Restoration architect here…the reason the mortar is deteriorating is because it’s designed to. We specify weaker mortar in repairs so it doesn’t put force back on the masonry causing it to spall.
