My husband has been in construction his whole career and he says no one has yet been able to replicate the Roman concrete.

The Ancient Roman's concrete consisted of a mix of volcanic ash or also known as Pozzolana, lime, and water to make a mortar and could heal it self when it got wet for instance when it was raining 🏟️

Concrete is a science. There is not „one“ concrete used nowadays. The reason we don’t use roman concrete is because we have no buildings like this anymore where it would be useful and advantageous

Only the really well built things would still be standing for 1000s of years.

Same thing for roads. Roman engineered roads have lasted to this day. Roads built today have potholes within a year 😤

Restoration architect here…the reason the mortar is deteriorating is because it’s designed to. We specify weaker mortar in repairs so it doesn’t put force back on the masonry causing it to spall.

Fun fact: the recipe for concrete got lost after the fall of the Roman Empire 476 AD) and got later rediscovered thousands of years later (1414)
