@cspanofficial: President Trump on Monday said the U.S. and Ukraine are “very close” to reaching an agreement on rare earth minerals to repay the U.S. for the more than $180 billion it has provided Kyiv in its fight against Russia. “It looks like we’re getting very close,” he told reporters in the Oval Office, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron on the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could potentially visit Washington, DC, to sign the agreement. President Zelensky, who previously rejected a proposal that would have seen the U.S. get access to half of his country’s rare earth minerals, has pushed for security guarantees to be included in any deal. President Trump doesn’t want to use U.S. troops as security guarantors but said European countries could provide the security in a post-war Ukraine. “Europe is going to make sure that nothing happens. I don’t think it’s going to be much of a problem. I think once we settle, there’s going to be no more war in Ukraine,” he said. “Once an agreement is signed, Russia is going to get back to its business and Ukraine and Europe are going to go back to their business.
