The Chowchilla bus kidnapping was one of the largest abduction cases in U.S. history, occurring on July 15, 1976, in Chowchilla, California. A school bus carrying 26 children, ages 5 to 14, along with their bus driver, was hijacked by three armed men—Fred Woods and brothers Richard and James Schoenfeld. They stopped the bus on a rural road, then forced the driver and children into two vans and drove them around for nearly 12 hours before moving them to a quarry in Livermore, around 100 miles away. At the quarry, the kidnappers imprisoned the children and driver in a buried moving truck with limited ventilation, food, and water. The kidnappers’ intent was to demand a $5 million ransom from the state. However, 16 hours into captivity, the children and driver managed to dig their way out, overcoming the roof of the truck, which had been covered with heavy materials. All captives escaped safely. Following their escape, the suspects were identified quickly due to evidence left at the scene, and all three were arrested. They were convicted and initially sentenced to life in prison, though later they became eligible for parole. James Schoenfeld was released in 2015, Richard Schoenfeld in 2012, and Fred Woods was granted parole in 2022. The case remains notorious due to the scale of the kidnapping and the trauma it inflicted on the victims, many of whom struggled with lasting psychological effects. This case has had a lasting impact, drawing significant media attention and influencing changes in laws around sentencing for serious crimes involving children.
