💉 Fear of needles is common, and can have lasting impacts on health when procedures are avoided because of this fear. The good news is that there are many evidence-based strategies we can use to help our children have positive experiences with needles and build trusting relationships with their healthcare providers from a young age: 💓 Prepare your child for what to expect ahead of time - use medical play to show and explain what they will see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. As you discuss this, talk about strategies your child can use to cope with the steps of the procedure. 💓 Be honest about how it will feel - this builds trust and provides opportunities to make a plan to cope with any potential pain/answer any questions. 💓 Acknowledge and validate your child’s feelings - let them know their feelings are normal and okay, you will be there with them to help them through anything they find hard. 💓 Use pain management - 12mo+ you can use numbing cream or vibration (like Buzzy Bee); under 12mo try oral sucrose, breastfeeding, sucking (eg on pacifier), and skin to skin - talk to your child’s medical team to see which options are appropriate/available for your child. 💓 Offer choices - do they want to watch or look away? Bring a comfort item? Sit on your lap or hold your hand? Watch a video or listen to music/relaxing sounds? 💓 Use a comfort position - these are positions where your child sits or lays with you, so you can comfort them and help them hold still at the same time. Research shows that laying children down for procedures increases experiences of pain and fear - try to use an upright position for children, or for younger infants cradle them in your arms. 💓 Encourage deep breathing and practice this ahead of time at home. 💓 Offer something positive for your child to focus on - look at a toy, sing a song, count, play I Spy, watch a video, etc. 💓 Afterwards, praise your child for something they did - held still, sat on your lap, counted, anything they did do to cope during the procedure. Ask them what they thought went well and if there is anything they’d like to do differently next time. Questions? Drop them below! 👇🏻 X Amanda
