Artificial planetary rings around Earth are hypothetical giant structures that could surround our planet, somewhat like the rings of Saturn. In the simplest version, such a ring could consist of millions of satellites or other objects placed in similar orbits, but a much more interesting concept is the orbital ring — a gigantic dynamic structure that could potentially serve as transportation, energy, and industrial infrastructure. Unlike a simple stationary ring, an orbital ring would rely on the movement of enormous masses at very high speeds to generate the forces needed to support the structure. Such a system could theoretically be used to transport people and cargo into space, support space stations and habitats, collect solar energy, and provide a foundation for large-scale space industries. The biggest challenges would be the enormous amount of material required, the energy needed to construct and maintain the system, structural stability, collision risks, and the difficulty of repairing such a massive structure. Building it entirely from materials launched from Earth would be extremely impractical, so an advanced civilization might instead obtain raw materials from the Moon and asteroids. One of the most famous concepts is the orbital ring proposed by Paul Birch, which envisions the ring not simply as a decorative structure but as a planetary-scale transportation system. The laws of physics do not fundamentally prohibit such a structure, but current technology is nowhere near capable of building one. Nevertheless, an artificial ring around Earth could theoretically become one of the major stages in the development of a spacefaring civilization, connecting Earth with large-scale orbital industries, habitats, energy systems, and transportation networks. #earth #physicstok #astro #sciencetok
