I raised my son his whole life. I was there for the everyday moments, the good days, the hard days — I was his Dad every single day. Now, because his mum and I are no longer together, I’ve gone from being a constant part of his life to 14 hours a month and a few phone calls. My son wants to see me. I want to see him. I’ve asked for more time. I’ve asked for even one sleepover — and the answer is always no. I’m told, “I’m not stopping you from seeing him,” but when every request for more meaningful time is refused, it’s hard to understand how that’s anything else. This isn’t about our relationship ending. It isn’t about winning or losing. And a child should never feel the consequences of two parents choosing not to be together. We both deserve the opportunity to be his parents. Most importantly, our son deserves to have both of us present in his life. I don’t want to take him away from his mum. I don’t want to replace her. I just want to be his Dad — to have sleepovers, weekends, school holidays, ordinary mornings and ordinary nights. To maintain the bond we’ve had his entire life. I will keep showing up. I will keep asking. I will keep fighting for meaningful time with my son.
