Life at Sea Cruises promised customers the trip of a lifetime: a 3-year cruise that would take them to 140 countries and all 7 continents, with visits to places like the Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu. But less than 2 weeks before it was scheduled to depart, the cruise was canceled. The cruise was originally supposed to leave on November 1 from Istanbul but was rescheduled to November 30 from Amsterdam. According to ABC News, the owner of Life at Sea's parent company, Miray Cruises, sent an update to customers saying that the trip was canceled on November 20. Vedat Ugurlu, Miray Cruises' owner, said the cancellation was because the company wasn't able to purchase a ship. CNN reported that Ugurlu told customers, 'Miray is not such a big company to afford to pay 40-50 million for a ship.' In his message, Ugurlu said that the company had 'presented the project to investors, and had official approval from some of them to buy the vessel.' However, the investors apparently later decided not to support the venture 'due to unrest in the Middle East.' However, the company has publicly denied that the cruise is canceled and is instead saying it's 'postponed.' Life at Sea was charging approx $38,000 to $100,000 per person per year for double occupancy, so a couple could expect to pay at least $230,000 in total, which is significantly cheaper than other comparable long-term cruises. In preparation for the trip, some people sold their homes and belongings. But now, they'll have to figure out their next move. 'The minute I saw an ad, I thought, 'This is really right up my alley,'' Keri Witman told Good Morning America. 'I owned a house. I had needed knee surgery, so I expedited all of those things. I sold my house. Got rid of most of my things.' Life at Sea reportedly said that any customer that requests a refund will get one through monthly installments from December to January. #lifeofseacruise #cruise #news #travel
