Sunflowers are so fun to grow 😊🌻🙌 Sunflowers are annuals, meaning they flower and die all in one year so they really go for it, putting on a show to make sure they’re able to reproduce. They are half hardy which means they can survive some light frosts which so they are great for starting off early with some protection - an unheated greenhouse or a sheltered cold frame. They will be killed by a hard frost (we’re talking -5C) so keep an eye on the weather forecast and move your seedlings indoors if necessary. To grow tall sunflowers I do the following: 🌻 Sow seeds 1cm deep in 9cm pots in early March. 🌻 Put them somewhere warm to germinate. I put them on my heated mat in my greenhouse but a sunny windowsill in the house is perfect. 🌻 Once germinated they can be kept in the greenhouse or a cold frame. 🌻 Once the risk of frosts has passed I plant them outside. 🌻 To get really big sunflowers they need a lot of sunshine so plant them somewhere sunny. 🌻 Sunflowers also need a lot of nutrients and water to grow tall so if you don’t have rich soil add a shovel full of compost or well rotted manure to your planting hole. 🌻 Keep them well watered. 🌻 Stake them to make sure they don’t break in the wind. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
