We are Holding over Ockham, southeast from London. IBERIA 3168, Airbus 320 NEO Heathrow director cleares us to descend while we Hold over position Ockham, so other aircraft Holding before us can start their approach and land. This is a very common procedure when there is traffic saturation. Aircraft enter holding patterns, and in a precise and coordinated way, Air Traffic Controllers, in this case Heathrow director, make them descend in the pattern. The aircraft that is the lowest is the first to start the approach, leaving an altitude than can be taken by the next aircraft, that also leaves an altitude for another one and so on. In this flight the First Officer was flying the aircraft. He was acting as Pilot Flying (PF) and I was acting as pilot Monitoring (PM) The captain chooses in each flight what role asumes each pilot. After the clearance the Pilot Flying selects the altitude and the vertical speed and reads aloud the FMA (flight Mode annunciator) The pilot monitoring (me) reads it silently and check that what we both see is the same. We do this to ensure that the aircraft is going to do what we want her to do. #aviation
