Funny I was trying this approach with sudoku ,mod the values of the numbers in a completed table ! It didn't work but it sort of simplified looking for a pattern of rotation in that number arrangement !! Cheers

Cheating answer: for finite groups, generate all possible mappings and see if one of them is an isomorphism. (Unpractical for anything serious)
