@ditto.daily: Until recently, the only way to properly diagnose endometriosis was by laparoscopy - a painful surgical procedure - and a huge obstacle to diagnosis. On average, diagnosis has been taking 8 years. But early detection is key to preventing organ damage, scarring, or infertility. But with new diagnostic tests becoming available, this is likely to improve, and it’s long overdue! The ones that are available are rolled out in some areas but still can be hard to get hold of. Hopefully this will change. @diamens.endometriosis are PhD scientists working with a World Endometriosis Society ambassador, currently developing an AFFORDABLE, AT-HOME (!) test using menstrual blood. It will undergo clinical trials this year. Afterwards, regulatory hurdles remain, but they hope to have the test available this year or next. The saliva Ziwig Endotest has been validated by one of the largest clinical trials for endometriosis in collaboration with 18 French specialist endometriosis centres. The diagnostic performance was initially tested from blood which later progressed to saliva samples. It uses next-generation sequencing and AI modelling. Although, this test is very expensive (around €800). EndoRNA test assesses expression of the gene encoding the enzyme fucosyltransferase 4 (FUT4) using quantitative RT-PCR. FUT4 expression is significantly increased in the cells of patients with endometriosis compared to the endometrium of healthy patients. The test is a short, safe procedure (a swab or aspiration biopsy) that can be performed in a doctor's office, involving the collection of a piece of mucous membrane from inside the uterus. It’s been commercially available on the Polish market since 2023. Bendifallah, et al. Validation of a Salivary miRNA Signature of Endometriosis - Interim Data. NEJM Evid. 2023 Żeberkiewicz, et al. Cass :
I sincerely hope we are the last generation that need surgery for diagnosis, history books will say how barbaric it was when a simple noninvasive test was possible

€800? That cost will fall. But laparoscopy? The costs, to the woman and hospital, are rising.

When will the test become available, and how do people sign up for the clinical trial?

Last week I've learned that on average endo diagnosis is obtained after 7ys of telling women how they're hysterical & dismissing them. For comparison Lupus is diagnosed after 5ys on average

I’d love content on nerves/sensation of the cervix?? Bit niche but it seems to differ a lot person to person! And there seems to be debate about whether it contributes to sexual function
