Ideally organic lettuce or salad is the way to go but it’s hard to find that in the supermarket and so if you are buying salad leaves in the supermarket, here’s a clever swap that can help reduce food waste and keep your greens fresher for longer! Most people grab pre-washed salad leaves, but what many don’t realise is that they go through one or more washing cycles with chlorinated water before being spun dry. This process puts stress on the delicate leaves, meaning that once you open the bag, they degrade very quickly. If you don’t eat the whole bag in one go, chances are you’ll end up throwing some of it away. If you buy unwashed salad leaves they haven’t gone through that washing process and so they last much longer in your fridge after opening! Yes, you do have to wash them yourself, but I think the reduction in waste makes it totally worth it! A good salad spinner makes the job much easier. Most supermarkets now stock unwashed versions of spinach, mixed leaves, and other greens so give it a try and see if you notice a difference with how long they last after opening!
