@castlesofscotland: Lennox Castle was built between 1837 and 1841 in the Norman castle style. The walls are castellated and battlemented, with four storey pavilions standing at each corner and an imposing porte-cochere framing the entrance. In April 1925 Glasgow Parish Council purchased the castle and the estate, resolving to build a new Mental Deficiency Institution. Lennox Castle itself was adapted into a nurses home, and was later requisitioned under the Emergency Hospital Scheme, with ward huts constructed near the castle, during World War II. A maternity unit was subsequently established on the site in 1941 which operated until 1964. In 1987 the castle was vacated and later fell into a state of ruin.
