RAMAPHOSA OUTLINES STRONGER BORDER CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSE IN NATIONAL ADDRESS PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation tonight from the Union Buildings, focusing heavily on South Africa’s escalating immigration pressures, public safety concerns, and recent unrest linked to foreign nationals. In his address, the President acknowledged growing tensions in several communities, stating that government understands the frustrations around unemployment, service delivery, and undocumented migration, but stressed that lawlessness and attacks on foreign nationals will not be tolerated. Ramaphosa announced that government will intensify border management operations, with increased deployment of security forces to key entry points and high-risk areas. He said the aim is to reduce illegal crossings while improving coordination between border agencies. He further confirmed a strengthened national immigration enforcement strategy, which will involve faster processing of documentation, stricter workplace inspections, and coordinated action against individuals and networks facilitating illegal immigration. The President also warned against vigilantism, saying that communities must allow law enforcement to deal with suspected undocumented persons through legal channels, not through violence or intimidation. He further emphasised that no person is allowed to confront another in the streets and demand that they produce identity documents, warning that such actions amount to unlawful behaviour and undermine the rule of law. Ramaphosa also warned about opportunists who seek political power by exploiting the legitimate concerns of South Africans, saying such actors risk inflaming tensions and deepening divisions in communities. On the issue of unrest, the President said police visibility will be increased in hotspot areas where protests and attacks have been reported, with intelligence-led operations to prevent further escalation. He added that government will also review broader migration policy frameworks to balance national security concerns with South Africa’s regional and humanitarian obligations. Closing his address, the President called for calm, unity, and respect for the rule of law, urging all communities to avoid targeting foreign nationals and instead work with authorities to address underlying socio-economic pressures. 💬 Do you think government’s response goes far enough to address illegal immigration and rising tensions in communities? #VMNews #Ramaphosa #SouthAfrica #Immigration #BreakingNews
