It is tempting to just "swipe and go" with that glass dropper, but keeping it away from your face is the golden rule of skincare hygiene.
Here is why you should keep the dropper at a distance:
1. Bacterial Contamination
Your skin is home to a natural ecosystem of bacteria, oils, and dead skin cells. When the dropper touches your face, it picks up these microscopic hitchhikers. Once you put the dropper back into the bottle, you are essentially inoculating your expensive serum with bacteria. This can cause the product to spoil faster or lead to breakouts.
2. Acne Cross-Contamination
If you are using a serum to treat an active breakout (like salicylic acid), touching the dropper to an inflamed pimple and then returning it to the bottle can spread those acne-causing bacteria to the rest of your face during the next application.
3. Product Degradation
Serums are carefully formulated with preservatives to stay stable. However, introducing foreign substances—like sebum (skin oil) or moisture from your skin—can destabilize the formula. This can make active ingredients like Vitamin C or Retinol oxidize and lose their effectiveness much sooner than they should.
