The Woman Who Was Frozen Alive, Nearly Died, Was Thawed Out & Survived… In 1980, Jean Hilliard lived in the small Minnesota town of Lengby. With a population of 87, this area is surrounded by forests, lakes, and farms in the state's north-central region. Essentially the middle of nowhere. on December 20, 1980, around midnight, Hillard was returning home from a night out in -22-degree weather. She had just left the Fosston American Legion in her father's Ford LTD. This car only had rear-wheel drive and lacked anti-lock brakes, making it hazardous to drive on the frozen, icy road. During her drive, the automobile rolled into a ditch. Hilliard, soon began walking for help. Her friend Wally Nelson, after all, was only two miles down the road. But, Nelson's house appeared further away than she remembered that night, and Hilliard soon became fatigued.

"When I crested each hill, I expected to see his residence, but it wasn’t there," she stated. As she finally saw the lights of his house, everything went black. She had completely froze, 15 feet away from the doorstep. Nelson woke up the next morning and noticed a “little hunk” of snow in his front lawn. When he got closer to investigate, he found Jean Hillard. She had collapsed just seconds before reaching him. “I grabbed her by the collar and skidded her into the porch. I thought she was dead. Froze stiffer than a board, but I saw a few bubbles coming out of her nose,” Nelson recalled. He carefully put her stiff body in the car and drove her to the nearest hospital, Medical staff tried to inject her with hypodermic needles, but they snapped when they made contact with her frozen flesh. The thermometer would not get her temperature because it was so low. Her eyes were unresponsive to variations in brightness, and her face was a pale gray. They thought she was dead, but opted to use heating pads to bring her body temperature back up nevertheless. Her temperature, as measured by the doctors, was 88, which is 10 degrees below normal. After some time, they detected a weak pulse at 12 beats per minute. By the middle of that morning, she woke up and was talking coherently after a couple hours. She was completely fine. #fyp
