Princeton’s new diversity prompt is out. Windy. We get a preamble, two “lived experiences,” and finish off with three questions in one prompt. We couldn’t get Joyce Carol Oates to Strunk-and-White this baby into a simple question? This new prompt replaces the two shorter essays they’ve traditionally asked:  (1)   Briefly elaborate on an activity, organization, work experience, or hobby that has been particularly meaningful to you. (150) (2)   At Princeton, we value diverse perspectives and the ability to have respectful dialogue about difficult issues. Share a time when you had a conversation with a person or a group of people about a difficult topic. What insight did you gain, and how would you incorporate that knowledge into your thinking in the future? (250) They kept their other 250-worder and added some more words for emphasis: Princeton has a longstanding commitment *to understanding our responsibility to society through* service and civic engagement. How does your own story intersect with these ideals? Their 50-worders remain the same: 1.     What is a new skill you would like to learn in college? 2.     What brings you joy? 3.     What song represents the soundtrack of your life at this moment? Their guidance on these drives kids nuts: “There are no right or wrong answers. Be yourself!” And it should: Princeton must think these questions provide some helpful insight in deciding whether to admit you—or they wouldn’t ask them. If your answer can potentially help you, that means some answers are better than others. I don't think admissions appreciates how kids agonize over questions like these. I like Princeton’s requirement to submit a graded paper. That’s a thoughtful way to try and deal with this perennial problem: Did this student write these college essays?
