Hi! 👋🏻 I’m Emily! A pediatric occupational therapist and a mom of twin toddlers. Here with tips to help you and your toddler have smooth days together. If you’re new here, follow along! Evidence shows that the result of forcing children to clean their plate can actually be the opposite of what we want! Introducing pressure on children at mealtimes causes anxiety, which increases power struggles. Pressuring them to eat a specific item actually decreases their chances of enjoying that food as an adult! I have talked in previous reels about the importance of interoception: a person’s ability to recognize sensations from inside their body. This sense is incredibly important for eating, potty training and communicating what hurts when we are ill. When we push a child to ignore sensations that their belly is full, we disrupt their ability to interpret signals from their body. This can lead to patterns of overeating that persist throughout life. So what can we do instead of forcing our kiddos to finish their plate? Follow to see my next reel on strategies for expanding your toddler’s diet peacefully! *If your child has specific growth or eating needs, work with your child’s team on what strategy is right for them. #toddlereating #toddlerdiet #occupationaltherapy #cleanyourplate #momlife #childdevelopment #pickyeater
