@shanewmurray: Obviously if this just happened a few times you’d probably be okay but Allowing your pup to drag you to say hi to another dog consistently creates an expectation for them to always be allowed to do it. The pulling towards the dog is then rewarded with interacting with the dog. Then when one day you don’t allow it the dog gets frustrated cuz of the existing expectation and then starts crying, barking, and lunging to do so and now you’re in a spot you could’ve prevented if you didn’t allow those types of interactions. And universe forbid that you feel embarrassed and know they’ll shut up if you let them say hi then you just rewarded all that reactivity now you’re in very deep waters. Most pups naturally want to go up to other people and dogs I just don’t allow it until they’re neutral with the triggers. Or I’ll allow it with balanced dogs who won’t fuss the puppy up and get them even more stimulated. Here I just recalled my pup and channeled those feeling into an activity with me. Again this is why I teach recall to a pup before I start to take them to busy areas like this so I can help manage it.
