I think his wife was having a heart attack or stroke and was trying to get some aspirin, Gene found her and was trying to get help, but the stress or shock made him fall or have a stroke..

Maybe Betsy knew she was having a heart attack or stroke so she panicked and dropped her pills and to prevent the dog from eating the pills she put it in the crate

I think Hackman was probably having a reaction (not sure what he as illness wise) and fell needing his pills his wife ran upstairs grabbed his pills tripped over the space hopper dropping pills died from the fall he probably died because she never came back with his pills dog died because couldn’t get food other dogs scavenged as where free to roam

I don't know the floorplan of their home. But, from the details given, the maintenance workers seeing Gene's body through a window seems logical. But seeing her body in the bathroom? That seems odd.

Wife dies suddenly. Remember, she is the caregiver. Gene was frail and of advanced age. Likely he was unable or unsure of how to get help, or fell in process and unable to get up.

Betsy died of natural causes because of a disease passed through rodents. Gene passed away a week later, due to complications with Alzheimer disease after a fall and underlying heart condition
