Where Wombat Found Shelter 🐑 💖 It was not the smell of smoke in the air that caused our hearts to race last night, but the smell of smoke rising from the little lamb who had just been surrendered into our care. Her human, carrying heartbreak and loss, told us her story. A wee twin Wiltshire Horn lamb, born in August of 2025, hand-raised and only recently weaned. When the Longwood fire tore through her patch, little Wombat fled. Her herd, her family, perished. She survived by chance and instinct, finding refuge in a wombat hole as the firestorm roared overhead. A merciless hunter, taking all in its path, offering neither kindness nor mercy. At first, it seemed Wombat had escaped unscathed. But a closer look revealed the quiet cruelty of fire and the most common injury seen in sheep, goats and cattle who survive such infernos. Her hooves were burnt. The wool above them was singed where flames had licked too close. The soles of her feet were blackened and her hooves heat-damaged, their natural resilience stripped away. Worst of all were the fine cracks at her coronet band, where hoof meets skin, threatening separation. Anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and soothing salves became her path to healing, alongside an abundance of kindness. Still bewildered, little Wombat carries the terror that drove her to run for her sweet life. Then we remembered the words that told us she had only recently been weaned. Could she? Would she? We mixed a bottle of warm, sweet formula. She initially resisted, then suddenly she knew. In that “ah ha” moment, we found our way to her heart. Her tail flickered to life as joy returned and all we could do was quietly wipe away our tears. Five days on and smoke still clings to her singed wool. An ember scald on her flank remains raised and sore. Outside, the land is parched—any remnants of grass scrunch under our feet. We remember a time when the grass was green and when smoke meant warmth, not devastation. Yet here she is. A curious little wonder, exploring every inch of the vet room and our hearts, already making them her own. In a world scorched and shaken, little Wombat reminds us that even in the darkest places, life still seeks shelter, still reaches for kindness and, above all else, still chooses to begin again.
