Offering respect to the “code writers” and following the rules is great. But code writers are human. Like you. The code is not perfect. Always be curious. Don’t be afraid to question. 😎👍🏼

if it was me, I would put a separate ground rod in because of gas

If it’s bonded at the meter, how is it not boded throughout the whole service? If it’s connected somewhere, it’s connected everywhere. Explain how I’m wrong. I have yet to have a single inspector be able to answer that question.

so we only bond the gas pipe at the entrance of the house..typically Gas and elec panel are on same side of house but not always..we run a #4 from clamp to main serv disconnect

The gas companies in TN will not allow you to bond the gas line to the electrical panel. They want a separate ground rod.

A detached building would have its own ground rods and disconnect so personally, I would bond it there.

In MS we bond only if it’s CSST. I believe it’s in the IRC and ICC which is the code book local AHJs go by over NEC sometimes or at least in my area. We bond outside from service to gas pipe entering

If there are things even you don't understand about why the code is the way it is, how are home inspectors like me expected to understand. I've asked electricians questions & get very obscure answers.

So in my area the conflict in this rule is only if you use black steel pipe no bond is required. If you use CSST a bond is required. But trac pipe isn’t required to be bonded IF it’s properly installe

It’s AHJ. It happens everywhere. We do not bond the gas piping here. Just a thought, I had to bond an additional panel and the inspector suggested that I attach to the number 4 bond wire with an irreversible crimp in lieu of running a separate wire out to the main panel.

by stating that an additional or "non-standard" (e.g., not the gnd in your 12/2), it ensures that the pipe is bonded to the svc entrance if the feeder to the sub-panel is damaged. this is an educated guess.

Dominion Electric down here grounds there own gas line. Saying we are not allowed to ground with electrical equipment. Because it mess with their electronics.
