The SG just has an absurd profile. It's basically the only guitar with the angle of an archback, but with a flat body. Pickups are made to be parallel to strings, but the SG body makes them crooked.

you’re right but its not that the field is being disrupted ‘more’ its because the fields stronger (more field lines) closer to the pickup so faraday’s law says faster field line cutting more voltage

Too close can also cause the strings to not vibrate correctly because of the magnets.

very close can reduce sustain, because the electro-magnets of the pickup will slow the vibration of the metal string, or so I've been told.

my offset tele has 2 pickups with an excellent clean sound but the JM pickup on the neck is very noisy and off sounding with very high gain tones, would increasing the height be better in this case?
