@travelwith.kri: Have you ever heard of Makauwahi Cave Reserve? 📌 Save this video for your trip to Kauai! This is a must-do for all ages, and the best part? It’s free! 🙌
🌊 Start at Shipwreck Beach – Relax, swim, or explore the cliffs nearby. It’s the perfect way to kick off your day! 🥾 Hike the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail – an easy, scenic walk with ocean views. 🌴 Discover Makauwahi Cave Reserve – Open daily from 10 AM - 3:45 PM. Inside, volunteers offer free guided tours (donations welcome). This cave is actually Hawai’i’s largest limestone cave and a major fossil site! 🐢 Visit the Tortoise Sanctuary – Past the cave, and you’ll find these adorable, slow-moving locals just hanging out.
✨ Fun Fact: This cave started forming 400,000 years ago as a sand dune! Over time, the sun hardened it into stone, and groundwater eroded the limestone—creating a freshwater pond inside. That pond eventually dried up, leaving behind layers of fossils, ancient pollen, and even evidence of extinct species! Scientists have learned so much about Hawaii’s past just from studying this one spot. 🤯

Yeah shipwreck isn’t for the faint hearted, we grew up jumping off the cliff but the swim back in was intense

My husband and two other people almost died on that beach. Don’t swim there if there is no life guard.

So like the sanctuary and everything is temporarily closed for anyone who wanted to try and visit. They do not have funding or grants to keep going. The torts are being re-homed.

that beach is not swimmable, even walking on shore get you clobbered with waves and its so rocky. We left after 30 minutes. IMO there's so many other beautiful beaches where you can relax/walk/swim.

Shipwrecks is beautiful and great for surfing… not a good beach for inexperienced swimmers

The cave is closed and the tortoise are gone. Do not swim at shipwrecks! There can be crazy rip currents
