EDs cannot be compartmentalized and often show up in our romantic relationships, influencing our thoughts and behaviors in various ways. Here are 3 common ED thoughts I hear from clients: • “What if they leave me for someone thinner/muscular? Someone who has a better body? Do they still find me attractive in my body?” Strength of your relationship is built on emotional connection, trust and your special moments, not solely on physical appearances. Although physical appearance plays a role, attraction comes from more than just physical traits. Your partner is with you because of who you are as a whole person, including your personality, values and the unique bond you share. • “What are they eating? Am I eating faster? I cannot finish before they do or they will make a comment or think that I’m fat.” Remember that everyone has their own eating habits and pace, so there will be differences in the way you eat, how much and how fast you eat compared to your partner. Your eating habits do not define your worth or how others perceive you. Plus, if your partner makes a comment, you can always communicate how this makes you feel and set a boundary! • “Do I look too small/big next to them? Are my legs thinner or thicker than theirs? Are they more defined and athletic than I am? Do they find me too heavy to carry?” Everyone’s body is unique and different, including your own and your partner’s. It’s important to appreciate and embrace individual bodies for what they are. What matters most is the love and connection you share, not how you measure up to societal beauty standards. If you feel like your eating disorder is taking a toll on your relationship, this is your sign to seek help you need & deserve.
