Jousting in feudalism was a form of divine judgment. It was used as part of the legal proof in trials. The duel could last until death, but more commonly it was fought until the first blood was drawn or until the weapon was lost. In Hungary, György Thury became a feared name among the Turks. He was an excellent swordsman and repeatedly challenged the best Turkish fighters. By this time, Thury was Hungary's top duelist, and according to his contemporaries, he had won over six hundred duels, which is why the Turks called him the 'Lion of Transdanubia.' According to a 16th-century humanist historian, a large Turkish man came to Hungary solely to fight him. Because he caused so much trouble for the Turks, in 1571, he was lured into a trap and killed with his 150 cavalrymen at the border of the village of Orosztony. The Turks severed his head and sent it to Istanbul, while his completely looted him yet they didn't dare to touch his sword. His body was buried with great respect by his son Miklós and Count Zrínyi György in Kanizsa. During the clash, Turkish captives, weapons, and the head of the Kanizsa captain were sent directly to the Porte. On the 10th of this month, the head of his Majesty’s captain of the Kanizsa, the late György Thury, was brought before the Grand Divan, mutilated by many blows, then sewn back together along with 9 other heads, 14 prisoners, 3 flags, and 2 hand drums. The Pasha took Thury’s head in his hand, carefully examined it, stroked his beard, and then ordered it to be taken away and buried with honor. #🇭🇺 #jousting #history #fyp #magyarorszag #viralvideos
