My church did it with just ash. You are first anointed with the oil, then by the ash. Should be super light.

I loved working at the DMV on Ash Wednesday because people would come in to renew their DL/replace it and we were REQUIRED to take a new picture. It was always a fun time.

My church mixes the ashes with olive oil to make a paste consistency. Too thick and it will crumble

Catholic here—just the ashes! No oil or water needed. Your forehead is naturally oily, the ashes will stick!
