@mbari_news: MBARI’s new flagship research vessel, the R/V David Packard, is at the midway point of its journey home 🚢⁠ ⁠  The ship departed from Vigo, Spain, and is now halfway through its six-leg expedition across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal, and up the Pacific Coast to Monterey Bay. ⁠The crew is hard at work keeping the vessel running smoothly at sea and continuing to upgrade and outfit the ship before its arrival. Capable of 10-day missions offshore of California, as well as extended expeditions across the Northeastern Pacific Ocean, the R/V David Packard will be the command center for MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts.  Unlike its predecessor, our new research vessel can also support the launch and recovery of MBARI’s autonomous technologies, from underwater vehicles that can map the seafloor, conduct visual surveys of the midwater, and monitor ocean health to aerial drones that can document sea surface conditions and wildlife. The ship’s updated technology will improve our capacity to map, monitor, and explore the vast and largely understudied ocean, enabling us to better protect this critical resource. ⁠  #Ocean #OceanExploration #Boat #FYP
