I understand what you're saying. But Canadian consumers are responding by not buying American. This is causing Canadian companies to sell more in Canada. We're trying to make America irrelevant. 🇨🇦

Maybe I’m still not understanding. But if we as Canadians match the tariffs dollar for dollar, aren’t we all just still right back to where we started ? 😂

What I’m getting from most of the comments is that it is ok for countries to place tariffs on US products but not ok for US to reciprocate. 🤔

The problem is, Americans want cheap products but won’t pay wages to offset the tariffs. It hilarious that they believe a terrible businessman who has failed at EVERYTHING he touches

For products like aluminum, there are very few domestic alternatives for the US manufacturer. So they will simply pay the tax. Aluminum smelting won't relocate, it's to energy intensive and expensive.

When you talk about Canadian tarrifs, it sounds like they haven't already been in place for years. It's compounding Canada was tarrifing US farmers & automakers to begin with.

The duty free store on the US 🇺🇸 side of the border is nearly out of business. Owner says sales down more than 80%. That’s telling you something 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why not just double down with export taxes on the same raw materials that the US needs and tariff the US made goods?

As a person who works in the fastener (bolts and nuts) manufacturing industry in Michigan. A tariff on steel, and not steel products, will drive the cold heading (manufacturing) to move to Canada.

Actually, the orthodox economist answer to this would be that you don’t retaliate that you keep the trade going because that’s beneficial to your consumers.
