This massive over-the-horizon radar station was built to detect intercontinental ballistic missile launches at distances of several thousand kilometers. This is why it was nicknamed the “Russian Woodpecker” in the West. Enormous resources and years of work by thousands of engineers and military specialists were invested in its construction. The complex was located near Chernobyl, and after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, it was soon taken out of service.
