🐢 Bezet Beach and the Mission to Save Sea Turtles in Israel ⠀ On the peaceful Bezet Beach, near Nahariya, something truly magical happens every summer — sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. ⠀ 📌 Who are these turtles? Mainly the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) — both endangered species. ⠀ Each female lays between 80 and 120 eggs and disappears back into the sea. But what comes next is the most dangerous part — survival. ⠀ 🏖 What’s the problem? — Many nests are laid near developed beaches — Beach equipment, fires, people, and trash destroy the nests — Hatchlings follow moonlight to the sea, but artificial lights disorient them ⠀ 💪 How do volunteers help? In Israel, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and many dedicated volunteers work to protect these turtles. ⠀ 🔸 What they do: — Patrol beaches at night to find new nests — Gently relocate the eggs to protected incubation zones — When hatchlings emerge (after 45–60 days), volunteers guide them safely to the sea ⠀ It’s a fragile moment — the babies weigh only about 20 grams and must cross a few meters of sand before reaching an ocean full of predators. ⠀ 🐢 This isn’t a show. It’s species conservation. ⠀ 📸 If you happen to witness a turtle release — don’t touch them, don’t use flash, and don’t interfere.
