@ohlanaa: This is a very long video but I figured it would be helpful for families that are interested in teaching their nonspeaker spelling. I know it can feel intimidating to start but it’s okay if you make mistakes when you start… we all have to start somewhere. I was hesitant to share this because I am still learning how to teach Justin to spell. I want to be completely honest and say it has been almost 2 months since I last spelled with Justin and I am so ashamed about it. We went to Panama in January and then planning the bday party in February, plus working full time I put spelling in the back seat. Spelling should be a priority for Justin and I know I am failing him by not practicing every day. He does see his practitioner once a week so he has that but it’s so important for me to practice with him every day as well. I wanted to share this video to encourage other parents to try and to also show you how it looks spelling with a nonspeaker who is just starting to learn. They dont always poke the right letters and when they are first learning you have to provide a lot of prompting. Those prompts slowly fade as they get better at spelling. It feels overwhelming but you can start with 10 mins a day, that’s how I am slowly bringing spelling back into our daily routine. Like I said, you have to start somewhere. Some other helpful tips I got from watching various tutorials: Keep stencils on lap, Write key word on keyword list, Say/coach where the letter is before putting the board down, Dont rush, Use/say left and right (forgot to do this today), up and down- to guide them at first. If they make a mistake, Never say the word “No” think of a baby learning to walk falling down, you wouldnt say no. Check your spelling go slow its okay. Use a shorter pencil if it is dangling. Tell the speller where they are in the word, for example, if they are spelling a longer word repeat the letters they already spelled to prompt them to the next one. I hope this is helpful!❤️ #spelling #autism #autistic #nonspeaking #nonverbal #communication #spellingtocommunicate #practicemakesperfect #neurodivergent #nevergiveup #autismawareness

Why not try spelling on an AAC device so there’s the option for voice output?

Excellent work mama. Sped teacher here. An easy way to know what board you need is to put a different color tape across as the top. So if the J board has red tape across the top you can easily get it

I wonder if you laid them all out if he would take the pencil and spell his name by tapping each letter
