I also narrate my own body language. For example, if I start looking around "omg stop looking around, make some eye contact they're going to think you're not listening". or "You're crossing your arms, are you mad? you're not mad, uncross your arms they'll think you're mad"

I wonder if this makes diagnosis/self assessment harder the older you get because we've been doing it so long that it seems "natural"

combine this with hyper vigilance from early childhood abuse and you can seem REALLY good at nonverbals. or misinterpret it wildly as people hating you 🤦‍♂️

Do you have a David Attenborough style commentary in your mind too sometimes? No? Just me? 🙃

Some of the learning is just pattern recognition! If you’ve seen/heard enough of the same thing over and over again, it sinks in…

I really want to know what a neurotypical brain is like then. What’s the inner monologue? You’re telling me they don’t think about body language or they automatically know? 😳😂

I had no idea neurotypicals can make sense of non-verbal cues effortlessly. I can read body language, but I need to decode things. It was something I had to learn.

i recognize expressions etc. but not always know what it means. I need to 'learn' a person to know how to interpret it. It's like I try to speak french but I only understand 50-80% 🥲

I do this and I read body language and mimic much better than average ppl. It feels natural to me but it IS a constant scanning, analyzing, being hyper aware of all ppl around me.

Yep. Bought a book on body language when I was in high school so I could learn it.

So my dad was an abusive alcoholic. I learned to read minor muscle changes in the face, and I can sense the energy coming off a person because of protecting myself since I was a kid. (Pt1)

My biggest struggle is keeping my facial expressions and body language in check. I don’t even think about it and people end up being able to read me like a book.

What about autistic people reading dog body language? I find it extremely easy but both my parents don’t understand it and no matter how much I explain they still struggle to grasp it

This is the one criteria that I’m never sure I fit, but from what you explained I do…I loved drawing cartoons as a kid and so much of that is watching what other people do with their bodies (1)

I cannot stand when the body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice don’t match the words coming out of their mouths. Then I get lost.

you just blew my mind. because I didn't realize....I've understood it because I've learned. I've observed. so I apply. 31 years and I just realized this.

this series is the best thing I have ever come across - autism assessments need to be written to be interpreted literally by the target population, and to lead to less misinterpretations

I wonder if this could be why I didn’t understand ppl and what was going on around me as a kid? Thought my parents didn’t socialize me properly 😂Later I studied psychology and learned to socialize

My theory is that’s why there’s so many neurospicy people in theatre. We’re all playing roles masking all the time; it’s just celebrated in theatre.
