What’s happening in the UK right now reminded me of this comment I received a couple years ago It’s almost impossible to avoid the news of what’s happening in a modern Britain. I was hoping that the racism my parents faced when they first arrived in the UK was a relic to be stored away in the archives of history…not to be resurfaced and affecting the future generations. Back in the 1990s growing up in the UK was different. I experienced some racial abuse both subtle and non-subtle and sometimes it was simply part and parcel of school yard humour - e.g being called currymuncher as a nickname. (Tbf I did enjoy a good curry) Over the years, as I grew up I encountered it inconsistently…seemingly less common but never absent. Did it leave scars? Perhaps but maybe it also served to make me more resilient and ensure I raised my voice against bias, prejudice and injustices. I wasn’t even born in the UK but I feel as British as anyone. I’ve dedicated the bulk of my adult life in service of the NHS, the national healthcare system. In fact a significant proportion of NHS staff are also from ethnic minority backgrounds. I’m as proud of my Indian heritage as I am to be British. But we need to learn from the past lest we doom ourselves to repeat the same mistakes. I still hope for a better future, distant as it might seem at the moment!
