How did I turn Brylant’s aggressive rears (in his fight response) into a trick he gets rewarded for? I think I could actually make a whole course on that 🙈 But in a nutshell, it started with string him emotionally and physically healthy. Then, learning about his emotions, triggers, and what he’s comfortable with. Building positive associations with me through food (although this is also a lengthy topic because he suffered from food aggression as well), then working with him based on his choice to participate (positive reinforcement and reverse round pen). When I used force, he’d lash out and explode, so positive reinforcement was the olny way to keep his angst at bay and keep his brain in a learning state. Once he understand the concept of +R (positive reinforcement) we made new associations to the rear, a positive one where he was rewarded. It then conditioned into something fun and enjoyable, rather than an action he takes to protect himself. He trusted me and no longer needed to protect himself, those emotions of fear were gone. Just the emotions of curiosity and eagerness, which is the perfect cocktail for training a new behavior. #horsetrainer #horsebehaviour #rearinghorse
