In the UK, people with ME/CFS have been permanently banned from donating blood since 2010, with similar lifetime bans active in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. It traces back to a 2009 study claiming a retrovirus (XMRV) was in the blood of ME/CFS patients. That study was retracted in 2011 and the virus was shown to be a lab contaminant, but several countries kept the ban anyway. The Canadian Blood Service and Australian Red Cross still state the illness could be caused by a transmissible infection. People with long COVID are also told they “must not donate” until fully recovered. Important context so this isn’t misread: there is no evidence that COVID or long COVID can be transmitted through a blood transfusion, and a major reason for these policies is protecting the donor, since giving blood can worsen a relapsing illness. Lab studies that transfer purified antibodies into mice are not the same as a blood donation. The point of this isn’t that anyone’s blood is dangerous. It’s that the same system calling these illnesses imaginary quietly treated them as physically real. I’m not a doctor, just sharing something I found wild.
