@drkurtrolfes: Are You Breathing Correctly? We humans take 20,000+ breaths a day. Respiration is a fundamental body system that drives metabolism, stress responses, posture, and much more. But what happens if we are not breathing properly? Well many of us are not. Often, we just find a way to compensate around poor breathing mechanics; something humans are quite good at, but it is at cost. The most common compensation is to over-breathe, taking quick, shallow breath to bring in air. When the diaphragm is not in a mechanically favorable position (after a full exhale), it becomes much more difficult to take in a full inhale. Over-breathing is very inefficient. It requires greater energy utilization from the body to bring in the same amount of oxygen as someone who is breathing less, but with proper mechanics. This energy use makes simpler tasks more difficult than they should be. Hyperventilation (over-breathing) can also lead to a poor carbon dioxide tolerance, since we are constantly expelling CO2 with every breath. With a poor CO2 tolerance, the body becomes less resilient to stress. The body cannot as efficiently manage its pH level/ acid-base balance. The sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system becomes stimulated when hyperventilating, leading to an increased heart rate & increased muscle tone. Over-breathing can also negatively affect posture. Mechanics of the diaphragm and thorax/rib-cage directly influence the positioning of your spine, scapula, and pelvis; therefore, by extension also indirectly affect the position of your extremities. Your body also wants to take the path of least resistance. Because it wants to use as little energy as possible to achieve the same outcome, you’re resting posture is likely going to be related to the position it is easiest for you to breathe in. If you cannot efficiently breathe in a certain position, you will not be able to maintain that posture for an extended period time. It is best to be able to breathe in a variety of postures. When seated, standing, supine, slumped, arched, etc. Breathe better, to breathe less, to do more. 🫁 🧘‍♂️ #breathe #breathing #breath #breathwork #respiration #diaphragm #core #coretraining #painrelief #rehab #physicaltherapy
