This may be the same effect of lifting ones leg at the dentist to avoid the gag reflex. The dentist was creating a mold up my upper teeth, the goo they use dripped out a bit before hardening and was hanging in my throat. I started to gag real hard, and he yelled "LIFT YOUR RIGHT LEG!". Worked like a charm.

I’m a nurse, we give patients who are nauseous after surgery an alcohol swab to sniff. It works, and my theory is it distracts your brain enough to pause the nausea.

Perhaps it’s like putting soap in a bed when kids have growing pains. It’s the smell that somehow distracts the nervous system. Only soaps that smell work and the smell needs to get renewed.

Interesting. I know that infants emit a scent (hormones) from their scalp that encourages an adult to bond. Maybe related to this?
