Have you ever seen a coati before?! 🥹⤵️ Coatis are the cutest / oddest-looking animal you’ve probably never heard of! Most Americans don’t even realize that coatis exist… let alone can be found IN the USA, itself! 🫶🏻 📌 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘢 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦-𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘴! More info below (where & when to see them, etc): 📍Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona 🥾 We’ve had the best luck spotting coatis in Chiricahua along the Silver Spur Meadow Trail (between the Visitor’s Center, Bonita Canyon Campground & Faraway Ranch). 🌄 Coatis are diurnal so the best time to spot them = early morning or late evening (around sunset). 👃 Keep your nose wide open and smell for their signature scent (smells kind of like a mix between a fox and a skunk - but nowhere near AS bad as a skunk. It’s a little bit musky; a little bit sweet). They are covered in an orange oil that gets on everything! 🏜️ Other great places to spot coatis in Arizona: •Madera Canyon •Colossal Cave Park •Patagonia Lake ✨ If you see one alone, it’s probably a male. The females and the babies “band” together (and are called a “band of coatis”). 🌎 These are white-nosed coati. However, there’s also…. •brown-nosed coati - typically found in tropical regions of South America) •eastern mountain coati - primarily found in Venezuela, favoring high altitudes. Sadly, they’re on the endangered species list! •western mountain coati - known to be in Western Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. They also favor high altitudes. This species is classified as “near threatened”. 👉🏻 Want to help protect these cutie-patooties?! Follow @world_coati_day (environmental conservation organization dedicated to protecting coatimundis from extinction) and see ways you can be a part of the action! ⚠️ Even though they’re adorable, they’re still wild animals! Always keep a safe distance away (these clips were captured using a telephoto zoom lens). Never touch or feed wildlife and alwaysssss respect them! • • #coati #arizonawildlife #wildlifeplanet #arizona #visitarizona #arizonacollective #chiricahuanationalmonument #cuteanimals
