Before we got MREs we had C-rations, canned food. The material in a claymore and in C-4 works great for heating up C-rations.

used small pieces of C-4 to heat coffee and MREs. It won't blow up and if you don't breath it you'll be fine if you do the twitch will go away in a couple years so no worries
