Do you desire 6-pack abs? I understand the desire aesthetically to achieve this. It is an immediate sign of discipline and hard work as it cannot be achieved without consistent hard work and discipline with nutrition and exercise. It does not, however, indicate proper or optimal core function. Many people assume that if you have 6-pack abs, you have a strong core. You can have six packs abs without a strong core or a core functioning well. Let’s revisit what makes up the core. There are the outer muscles- rectus abdominals- which give that 6 pack look. There are also the obliques, transverse, pelvic floor, multifidus, erectors, diaphragm, etc. If you are leaking urine, dealing with hemorrhoids, hernias, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic floor dysfunction, constipation, sexual dysfunction, back pain, etc., it’s likely that your core could use some fine-tuning. I see a lot of athletes who are very strong and who have very defined abdominal muscles, who cannot relax the muscles, or who show other signs that the various parts aren’t working well together to manage pressures. Many women are taught to “suck in” their bellies. There are a lot of societal reasons for this but it’s also cued that way in exercise classes. I hear a lot of “pull your belly button to your spine” across different fitness disciplines and although this is well-intended, it’s not a great cue for core activation. And remember- it NEEDS to relax also. So if you are cueing people to contract their cores make sure you are also cueing them on how to relax, let go, and expand with their breath. #corestrength #coreexercises #coreworkout #abdominales #anatomyart #moveu #sixpackabs
