During the first day of the 🇺🇳 United Nations General Assembly in 🗽 New York, 🌐 world leaders mentioned the words technology or AI — in all their iterations, including references to digital and the Internet — over 70 times. 🇺🇸 US President Joe Biden and 🇺🇳 UN Secretary-General António Guterres mentioned those words more than others. But most leaders mentioned technology in their speeches, including 🇺🇦 Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, who talked about the role of 🧠 artificial intelligence in terms of war and cyber tools. “Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence hold both enormous potential and enormous peril. We need to be sure they are used as tools of opportunity not as weapons of oppression,” 🇺🇸 Biden said. “Together with leaders around the world, the United States is working to strengthen rules and policies so AI technologies are safe before their release to the public, to make sure we govern this technology not the other way around, having it to govern us.” 🇺🇸 President Biden added he is “committed to working through this institution [the United Nations] and other international bodies and directly with leaders around the world, including our competitors, to ensure we harness the power of AI - artificial intelligence for good, while protecting our citizens from its most profound risk.” In his 🇺🇳 UNGA speech, 🇺🇳 UN chief Guterres said: “When I mentioned artificial intelligence in my General Assembly speech in 2017, only two other leaders even uttered the term. Now AI is on everyone’s lips — a subject of both awe and fear.” He also told world leaders that “generative AI holds much promise, but it may also lead us across a Rubicon into more danger than we can control.” 🇺🇳 Guteress added: “Even some of those who developed generative A.I. are calling for greater regulation,” he said. “But many of the dangers of digital technology are not looming on the horizon.
